BRGY.TUGOS, SORSOGON CITY "Model Barangay on Ecological Solid Waste Management System"
Barangay Tugos, Sorsogon City (West District), was Awarded as Model Barangay on Solid Waste Management by the Dept.of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) last July 17,2004. According to Brgy.Captain Rogelio Jebulan Sr. they achieved the said award because of their response to Republic Act 9003 also known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, by the National Government,the DENR and the City Government of Sorsogon headed by City Mayor, Hon. Sally A. Lee.
July 15,2004 when Brgy.Captain Rogelio Jebulan Sr. recieved an information that the said Barangay is a candidate for the Nation Wide Search for Model Barangays for Eco Waste Management System 2003-2004. The concept of this Search is the active implementation on proper waste disposal, such as Segregation,Composting and the Stablishment of the Materials Recovery Faciliy (MRF) where the non-biodegreable (recyclable) waste are stored and later sell it to thr junkshop for the purpose of recycling.
Out of 500 Barangays accross the country,who participated the search, only 180 Barangays made it to the final search and Brgy.Tugos is one of those who was choosen to be a finalist. Four Barangays from Sorsogon have been choosen as finalist they are Brgy.Lubiano of Pilar,Sorsogon, Brgy.Diamante of Prieto Diaz, Brgy.Poblacion of Bacon District and Brgy.Tugos of Sorsogon City. Province wide it was Brgy.Lubiano got the highest commendation, followed by Brgy.Tugos of Sorsogon City that brought the said Barangay to be Awarded as the Model Barangay.
Although in the National Level, Brgy.Tugos didin"t make it, still the said Barangay recieved an Award of Recognition which was held in Malacanang Palace with the presence of the President of the Republic the Philippines, Her Exellency President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. According to Brgy.Captain Rogelio Jebulan Sr. " the continous implementation of comprehensive Solide Waste Management Program is the ultimate goal of his Administration, to promote zero waste in his Barangay and maybe next year they can make it already in the National Level."
